CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Kim Walker. Matreus Research Facility. Willow Springs Road, Austin, Texas

Time melted into a blur of hurt and impotent fury. Kim no longer had any idea whether it was morning, noon, or night—or what day it was for that matter. Her head whirled while her body was on fire with a pain so agonizing that she’d passed out at least twice, maybe more. Her ribs burned where several punches had landed. Her left hand throbbed from her broken fingers. She felt as if she’d been strapped to the hard, plastic chair forever, while at that very moment someone could be cutting into Emma’s flesh. Somehow, someway, she had to escape. How was proving to be the difficulty, especially as she couldn’t seem to push past her throbbing joints to focus on finding a way out of her dilemma. A gun would be helpful. Even a knife—but she had neither. All she had were her wits, which were in danger of folding altogether under an onslaught of torture.

Ice cold water flooded over her face. She gasped, inadvertently sucking in a mouthful of water, then choked as she burst into a barrage of hoarse coughs. Then a fist plowed into her face. Her head smacked sideways as fresh pain shot along her jaw and up into her temple. Tears stung her eyes. Her ears buzzed with white noise. In the background, a man shouted, but his words made no sense. Then rough hands grabbed her shirt and, half lifting her off the chair where she sprawled, shook her. Her hand smacked against the arm of the chair. Pain seared up her arm. But at least her focus returned, and with it a ball of nausea that she couldn’t fight. Twisting, she vomited bile and blood onto the cement floor. Slumping back in the chair, she willed herself not to pass out again.

“Disgusting,” snapped a man’s cold voice.

Channeling all her hopelessness and rage, Kim lifted her head and squinted through her swollen, watery eyes.

The blond-haired man who’d captured her in the operating theater stood in front of a desk, legs apart in a display of arrogance. His arms were folded over an immaculate suit jacket where spots of bright red blood darkened the fabric. Her blood. “Ah. She’s back.” He paced back and forth in long, measured strides as if he possessed a restless energy he couldn’t contain. “I’ll ask you again, what are you doing here?”

“I told you. I want my daughter.” The words came out mumbled through her cracked and bleeding lips. If only she hadn’t been so reckless. But when that doctor had bent over the body on the operating table, scalpel in hand, she’d had to stop him. In the end, though, the body had belonged to an unknown man. It hadn’t been Emma but what her snap decision had done was land her in the enemy’s hands. If she could hold out until it was time for Colonel Wilson’s second phase to begin—maybe, just maybe, she still had a chance to save her daughter’s life.
